Back to Black
Black is staging a comeback. Here are a few quick tips from our Carolyn Bullivant on how to introduce the shade of the moment into your home.
Being a neutral, black is never not in style, but it is enjoying a moment right now, especially in a subtle matt form.
Consumers are increasingly looking to express themselves through interior design. However, not everyone is confident enough to decorate with one single bold colour. For those who are a little unsure, a monochrome theme is the perfect way to add that all important touch of black, offset with a contrasting, bright (and importantly safe) white.
A monochrome colour scheme is particularly good for bringing period properties up to date with slick minimalism. This can be achieved with a strong but restrained palette, such as stark white walls, handle less white cabinetry and whitewashed brickwork, punctuated with black detailing in the form of window frames, lamps and wall lights, or details such as matt black wall-mounted taps. The palette draws your attention to the original fabric of the building and its heritage.
The key to monochrome appearing modern, rather than harsh or heavy is to keep things simple. Monochrome works best is rooms with no skirting boards, cornices or architraves and no unnecessary adornment or pattern. This keeps the setting simple and lets the colour scheme speak for itself. Why not give it a go yourself?
Go Bold or Go Home
One place in particular that we’re seeing a lot of matt black is in the kitchen.
Being as versatile as it is, matt black can be incredibly dramatic, can act as an accent, or really ground an otherwise airy space. It’s timeless yet modern at the same time. If you are of the opinion that more is more and feel confident enough to kit out your whole kitchen in black, Steel’s Ascot range offers matching cabinets and appliances and includes a matt black option.
The range of kitchen units, sinks and food preparation stations offer the perfect complement to a Steel range cooker and are designed to visually match the appliances themselves.
Steel is the only brand in the UK to provide an entire kitchen solution which is engineered to match the look and feel of your range cooker for a striking, contemporary look.
Few kitchen brands offer high performance appliances that visually match, let alone offer a full kitchen solution. With an assortment of matching refrigerators, dishwashers, range cookers, cooker hoods, modular columns, food preparation stations, kitchen cabinets, sink units, kitchen islands, large storage compartments and lengthy work surfaces to choose from, even the most discerning home chef is sure to be able to create the kitchen of their dreams with the Steel collection, in this season’s hottest colour.
